Description: Whatever Francis Ford Coppola’s impulse to combine elements of Virgil, Livy, Shakespeare, Vertigo, On the Well of Eternity, the career of Robert Moses, film noir, and science fiction in one film, it was clearly not the most logical impulse. He was engrossed in the very long shoot of “Megalopolis” for over 40 years. The supposedly self-financed film he released today in Cannes is in some ways like a proof of concept for a concept that nobody has been able to define until now. But even if Coppola did not make his vision coherent, that is not the same as not making it watchable.
