Description: This coming-of-age story has a fairly consistent structure: A young person with a difficult home life must learn how to overcome certain obstacles, including perhaps forgiving their parents, if they want to grow up. Two films in Sundance’s U.S. Drama competition attempt to look at the genre from a different perspective, in the case of “Didi,” on the Asian American experience. “In the middle of the year,” a Latinx family. Both films also frame structure and tone. But it takes one film to maintain one generation’s desire to understand another, which is usually the lifeblood of the genre.
