Plot: Queen of the Desert is an expansive and solemn biopic of Gertrude Bell, compete with Nicole Kidman as a relative to the fearless Englishwoman-abroad role she had in Baz Luhrmann’s Australia. Bell was British traveler, scholar and specialist of the first twentieth century who, like TE Lawrence, took a patrician interest within the Arab peoples who were craving to throw off the yoke of the Turkish Empire. She created a stimulating contribution to making the kingdoms and nation states of what’s currently called the middle East. The sheikhs were maybe supposed to be the equivalent of British India’s obliging maharajahs. That was before oil was discovered.
