Description: Small Things Like These movie is based on the Irish Magdalene Laundries, also known as the Magdalene Asylums. Run by Catholic nuns, these institutions were primarily intended to house unmarried pregnant mothers ‘though some women were held there for crimes such as “promiscuity,” incest victims, and mental illness’. The women were given meager rations, made to work long hours in commercial dry cleaning businesses, and forced to give their babies up for adoption. Infant mortality rates were shockingly high.
