All we know about them is that they are driven and impoverished. Since the hero stuffs cardboard inside his shoe in the opening scene we can infer that they are impoverished. Their coach is portrayed throughout the movie as being reticent and mysterious so we don’t get to know them very well. We certainly don’t know what he did to make them that way or why they are so good. Furthermore, we are unaware of the true stakes.
